The reality to open a cancer support centre on the Waterside has now moved a step nearer as Wessex Cancer Trust have welcomed the Waterside Cancer Support Centre to operate under the umbrella of this long established charity.
The proposed Centre will provide a free drop-in centre, information service, one to one counselling and relaxing therapies not only for cancer patients but also their dependents, partners and carers who can suffer intense emotional difficulties but normally have no access to the support which the centre will offer.
Many of those affected by cancer are unable to travel outside the area to obtain the support they need and so a locally based support group will be of real benefit.
Discussions with the Waterside’s GP practices have resulted in widespread enthusiastic support and the group is confident that they will make great use of the facilities on offer.
The Steering Committee, chaired by June Richens, is looking for potential volunteer “befrienders”. This is an important role for those with good listening skills and will involve initial training and ongoing support.
A search for suitable premises is underway and substantial fund raising is key to the success of the Centre.
Grant applications are being made to a range of potential bodies.
If you would like to support this very worthwhile cause why not go along to a “Ladies Evening” at the Fountain Court Hotel, Hythe on Thursday 20th May at 7.30 pm.
The evening will centre around a fashion show, hosted by Magpie Fashions, and also include jewellery and beauty products.
Tickets for this fun evening are available from Magpie Fashions in Hythe High Street or the Waterside Herald offices for £10.
The evening will be opened by Sally Hall, CEO of Wessex Cancer Trust.
For more information about the Centre or, to offer assistance with funding, premises or other items please contact June Richens at 023 8084 2557
