Children and their families are invited to follow in the footsteps of one of the world’s great plant hunters this half term.
Exbury Gardens near Beaulieu are offering guided walks through the 200 acre woodland garden, leading to some of the trees and plants brought back from the woods and valleys of China by intrepid George Forrest who braved many dangers and almost lost his life in pursuit of plants.
The great explorer will be brought back to life by Exbury staff so that visitors can learn the history of many of the beautiful rhododendrons growing at Exbury.
They will also learn of the dangers he faced and the hardships he undertook in his quest for new specimens.
In the course of five expeditions to the Yunnan, Forrest brought back thousands of specimens and introduced hundreds of species.
Exbury grows many of the rhododendron species he introduced including R. lacteum, R. fictolacteum, R. fulvum, R. yunnanensis and R. impeditum. Some of these species became the parents of Lionel de Rothschilds most successful hybrids, including R. ‘Lionel’s Triumph’, R. ‘Hawk’ and R. ‘Fortune’.
The guided walks will take place twice a day from May 29 to June 2 and be be free to all who have bought entry tickets to the Gardens. Younger visitors will receive free seeds to take away and grow.
“Exbury as we know it today would not have been possible without George Forrest,” said the Garden’s owner, Mr Edmund de Rothschild, son of Lionel who started to plant the great woodland garden on the banks of the Beaulieu River in 1919. |
