Despite the downpour, the official opening of the refurbished promenade on Hythe waterfront, went ahead with BBC South Today weather girl, Alina Jenkins cutting the ribbon.
Hythe and Dibden Parish Council Chairman, Cllr Brenda Smith, began the proceedings with a short moment of silent for those whose lives had dramatically changed one year on from 7-7-2005.
Thanks were given to all those involved with the project, and how partnership working with Hampshire County Council and New Forest District Council had finally borne fruit.
" It was a long time, but well worth the wait, and will be enjoyed for many years to come." said Cllr Brenda Smith, who then went on to praise the work of the construction company, Osbournes, not forgetting the patience of local residents and businesses throughout the building process.
This was echoed by the Leader of Hampshire County Council, Cllr Ken Thornber, who was delighted to be at the official launch of the promenade.
He said: "The regeneration of the town will improve the quality of life for residents and will seal the future of Hythe on the Waterside.
Chairman of New Forest District Council, Cllr David Scott, said " It is a magnificent achievement which is already extremely popular.
It is a vital component of the revitalisation of Hythe, and has been brought about by the hardwork and dedication of all those involved in the project."
The project was jointly funded by Hampshire County Council, New Forest District Council and Hythe and Dibden Parish Council, and follows extensive public consultation on the design proposals.
Mr David Shimpe, Clerk to Hythe and Dibden Parish Council said: “This is an excellent example of the three authorities working together, to produce something hugely significant to people on a local level."
It features a brand new boardwalk and amphitheatre, which will be used to stage entertainment events, such as acts from the Waterside Arts Festival, which is currently running until 15th July. |
