“It was another important day in the history of Calshot”,
said the Leader of Hampshire County Council, Cllr Ken Thornber, as
he formally opened the RJ Mitchell House at the Calshot Activities
Centre recently.
Named after the designer of the Spitfire aircraft, flown during
WW2, it will mean that groups of up to 60 people will have comfortable
accommodation during their stay at the Centre.
The £1.2m 60-bed residential block has rooms for single occupancy
or small groups of up to 3 people to share the simple but highly
practical building, and enjoy the beautiful views of the Solent as
an added bonus.
Dr Gordon Mitchell, the son of RJ Mitchell (and who also spent some
time here as a member of RAF Calshot), was one of the honoured guests,
and afterwards took a tour around the building to see for himself
how well the design by Hampshire Architects and the building constructors
had turned the dream into reality.

Derick Ellard, Vice Chair of the Calshot Association, remarked that
he was delighted with RJ Mitchell House, giving even more young people
in Hampshire the chance to enjoy the excellent facilities.
The Calshot
Association is the representative body for all individual users of
the site and all clubs/organisations. It seeks to improve facilities
at the Centre as well as raising funds to provide a small bursary
for young people who would benefit from the experience that the activities
centre has to offer.
Other guests at the opening were Mr Maldwin Drummond, Cllr Pemberton,
Chairman of New Forest District Council, County Councillor Lee Dunsdon
and Cllr Brian Dash, together with HCC Executive Member for Recreation
and Heritage, Cllr Margaret Snaith. |
