It seemed to be “Malt and Hops day” at the 2005 RNLI Raft Race, held on Sunday 21 August.
Crowds watched as homemade craft took to the water between Hythe Marina and the historic Pier, with teams of highly enthusiastic and dedicated individuals paddling hard to win.
The RNLI had a whale of a time keeping the crowd and competitors cool in the afternoon sunshine, and ensuring the event was a safe and happy one.
For the younger members of the public there was the added attraction of a bouncy castle and fire engine to keep them amused in between races.
This year, “McMullen Maurauders” represented the Army, and at first glance, they seemed formidable with the “tank” on board, but perhaps the extra weight doomed them to failure?
Hardley School had bad luck in their first race, when their craft sank, but after a few minor adjustments, they gave it another shot in the handicap race, and although not winning, they certainly had the competitive spirit to try again.
The junior race was contested by one of the youngest teams to take part; and although the Hythe Sea Scouts won the race, the youngsters of “Funky Hippo” should be commended for their valiant effort.
BBC’s Dennis Skillicorn expert commentary ensured that everyone knew what was happening, during the race and between times and at the end of the day, BBC Weather Presenter, Alina Jenkins gave out prizes to the winning teams.
