| Tenacious under full sail |
|
|
The Jubilee Sailing Trust's new wooden sailing vessel, Tenacious, has
successfully completed her maiden voyage to Jersey. Initial heavy weather
did not deter her crew, which included those in wheelchairs and an 82
year old.
Tenacious, at 65 metres overall length, is the largest wooden vessel
built last century. She has 3 masts with 21 sails. A total of 40 voyagers
can be taken, with up to 20 disabled (including 8 in wheelchairs).
She
was built by the Jubilee Sailing Trust in Woolston using skilled labour,
disabled and able bodied volunteers over a 4 year period. The overall
cost is £14.3m. Raising this money was a big challenge, and the Trust
received tremendous support from many sources, including £6.5m from the
Lottery Sports Fund.
£12m has already been raised, but another £2.3m is
required to complete Tenacious free of debt.
