Sir Christopher Cockerell,
the inventor of the hovercraft, lived in Hythe for many years. His
house, in Prospect Place looking out over the water, was only a short
walk from the Marine Institute in St John's Street. The Institute,
a government department, was where the hovercraft models where tested
in the long test-tank.
All that remains of the Institute is The Grove, a large house that
once contained the Institute offices and laboratories.
The houses
at the rear of The Grove are built on the site of the test tanks
and boat-yards; the St John's Street car park was originally the
site of prefrabicated offices and laboratories. The Grove now contains
the Parish Council offices and other community organisations.
Sir Christopher died in May 1999 but his house is still owned by
the Cockerell family. |
