Frost Lane Farm (Barry's Sanctuary)
This page was last updated on Friday July 21, 2006

Frost Lane Farm has been in existence for over twenty years. Barry rented the field from the New Forest District Council so that he could keep goats and chickens; goats milk was difficult to obtain regularly so the only solution was to keep goats. (Updated news available on what's been happening down on the farm in 2006)

Over the years the field has provided a home to various waifs and strays; sheep, geese, two pot bellied pigs (Percy and George) and just lately two donkeys (Jenny and Domino) fostered from the Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth. The donkeys have now become something of a star attraction for the field; also appearing in church plays, Easter festivals, school fetes and as substitute reindeer helping Santa with his sleigh.

For many years the field has also been home to many birds. Swallows come and nest every year in the sheds, and more recently tawny owls have made a nest and reared their young - all of which was captured on video. Infra-red cameras, located in the nest box and outside, captured on video tape the happenings in the box.

I am a little red rooster... and this is my domain ... My name is Scorpion.
During all these years the animals in the field and the animals have been accessible to anyone walking up to Shore road playing fields or past the level crossing at the bottom of Frost Lane. Anyone has been able to feed the animals if they want, and many bring bags of food especially. As the Sanctuary is supported solely by Barry this food is very welcome.

Update 2006

We only have one pig now - George - the others died of old age.

We have three owl nest boxes, unfortunately, although they did their courting in them this year, they have not nested. Last year they produced three young but only two survived to tell the tale.

The Wagtails have taken over one of the owl boxes to make their nest and have laid six eggs so far. They are really busy at the moment.

We do not mind anyone feeding the animals as long as they don't feed the donkeys. It can make them overweight and also nasty tempered. The Donkey Sanctuary is very strict about their weight hence the sign "do not feed the donkeys".

Although it is old news - the farm was on TV last year when the owls were filmed by Meridian South local news.
