Latest figures (from government statistics) show the population of Hythe in 1998 at 20,000 residents. This figure is for the wards of Dibden & Hythe North, Dibden Purlieu and Hythe South.

Dibden and Hythe North
Population:
The resident population of Dibden and Hythe North in mid 1998 was 8600 people, 5 per cent of the population of New Forest local authority. 17 percent of Dibden and Hythe North’s population in mid 1998 were aged under 16, 56 per cent were aged between 16 and 59 and 27 per cent were aged 60 and over. This compares with 18, 55 and 27 per cent respectively for New Forest as a whole.

Vital Statistics:
A total of 69 live births to mothers usually resident in Dibden and Hythe North and 76 deaths of residents of this ward were registered in 1998. These represented crude rates of 8 births and 9 deaths per thousand residents compared with 10 and 13 respectively across the whole of New Forest local authority.

Employee Jobs:
There were 2400 employee jobs in Dibden and Hythe North at September 1998, 4 per cent of the New Forest total.

Income Support:
In August 1998 there were 350 Income Support claimants in Dibden and Hythe North. This represents 5 per cent of the resident population aged 16 or over. For New Forest the proportion was 5 per cent compared with an average of 8 per cent for Great Britain overall.

Indices of Deprivation:

Population:
The resident population of Dibden Purlieu in mid 1998 was 3300 people, 2 per cent of the population of New Forest local authority. 19 percent of Dibden Purlieu’s population in mid 1998 were aged under 16, 52 per cent were aged between 16 and 59 and 28 per cent were aged 60 and over. This compares with 18, 55 and 27 per cent respectively for New Forest as a whole.

A total of 30 live births to mothers usually resident in Dibden Purlieu and 29 deaths of residents of this ward were registered in 1998. These represented crude rates of 9 births and 9 deaths per thousand residents compared with 10 and 13 respectively across the whole of New Forest local authority.

There were 600 employee jobs in Dibden Purlieu at September 1998, 1 per cent of the New Forest total.

A total of 79 live births to mothers usually resident in Hythe South and 72 deaths of residents of this ward were registered in 1998. These represented crude rates of 10 births and 9 deaths per thousand residents compared with 10 and 13 respectively across the whole of New Forest local authority.

There were 600 employee jobs in Hythe South at September 1998, 1 per cent of the New Forest total.
